Guest speakers
Sydney Moshoaliba
Sydney was born and raised on the East Rand/Ekurhuleni. He matriculated in 1991 from Katlehong High School and in 1993 started working for an engineering company called Genflex in Alrode South. Because the employer cut his salary from R250 to R100 per week a few days after he began work, Sydney soon left and took up a job at Zeneca Pharmaceuticals. In 1996 he was part of helping introduce the CHEMICAL WORKERS INDUSTRIES UNION (CWIU) in his workplace and was elected as a Shopsteward, a position he held until he was retrenched in 2013. He joined the Casual Workers Advice Office (CWAO) in 2015.
Bridget Kenny
Bridget Kenny is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of the Witwatersrand. She works on service work and precarious employment. Her books include Retail Worker Politics, Race and Consumption in South Africa: Shelved in the Service Economy (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018) and Wal-Mart in the Global South, co-edited with Carolina Bank Muñoz and Antonio Stecher (University of Texas Press, 2018). She has worked with the South African labour movement for over twenty-five years.
